Translation Tools (641060) - 5 ECTS

1. Course description:

The subject of this course is the introduction to language technology and modern computational tools, assisting the translation procedure. The course’s objective is to help students develop skills, such as use of electronic dictionaries and term-bases, text corpora and linguistic tools, to familiarise themselves with conducting online search, to learn about translation memory systems (including creating, importing and exporting translation memories, aligning documents and creating a translation memory by using the aligned documents) and machine translation. Students are required to attend all sessions, as it is a workshop course. 

The course includes the following sections:

  • Introduction to automated/machine translation
  • Introduction to Corpus Linguistics – Construction of corpora (introduction to the use of tools such as Sketch Engine, AntConc, etc.)
  • Introduction to Text Alignment (use of tools such as LF Aligner). Practice with parallel corpora such as Linguee, Glosbe, Source Project, etc.
  • Translation Memories, creation, import and export TMs (using tools such as SDL Trados), quality assurance.
  • Electronic dictionaries and termbases (using tools such as SDL MultiTerm).

During the last four weeks of the course, students present their projects, based on translation memory tools (individual projects).

2. Learning aims

The ultimate purpose of the course is to improve students’ technological skills, as regards translation and modern practice, directly connected to the labour market. Having successfully completed the course, students will be able to: 

  • Effectively use various software which assist translators in their work (translation tools), and understand how CAT Tools and Translation Memories work;
  • Find solutions in complicated translation issues and apply their knowledge to their daily work as translations;
  • Assume responsibility for their translation choices and work in various professional environments;
  • Align documents in order to create translation memories;
  • Coordinate small groups of fellow translators, via their practice in team work, prepare and organise translation projects;
  • Create and maintain translation memories, share them by using the import/export feature;
  • Familiarise themselves with SDL Trados Studio.
